You can basically use any vinyl plotter. Gerber makes a good one as does Roland. We have used both. Clean artwork is more important to obtain good quality cuts.

What material do you prefer to use for your masks? I've tried a few different things, from vinyl sticker to a vinyl "painter's mask" that I was given by a local signmaker/autopainter shop. Some have kind of worked, surviving the heating process and still coming off cleanly, but others haven't. I've also had the vinyl adhesive cause some troubles on the underlying powder base coat. (A specific brand recommendation would be be greatly appreciated, I don't know much about this industry...)

Thanks a bunch for the forum!

We use a hi-temp mask from Argon, they make powder coating masking tapes also.

Thanks for the help.

Here's what I see on their site (http://www.argonmasking.com):

Quote:
PC400 Green Powder Coating Tape on Clear Liner (400ºF/204ºC)

* PC400 2 mil polyester tape on 3 mil clear liner
* Powder coating, plating, anodizing
* Hand cut custom shapes for prototyping or small jobs.

PC400-6000L . . . 6˝ x 72yds . . . $102.00
PC400-24000L . . . 24˝ x 72 yds . . . $408.00

(and a bunch of sizes/prices in between).

Does this look the right stuff to you?

For my experimental purposes, this stuff's a bit spendy, and 72 yards of mask would be something I'd have to address in my last will and testament to pass to my grandchildren. *But* if I can't find a better option, and this can be cut on my vinyl plotter (yes? just like a sticker?), I might spring for a roll... Anyone out there want to share?

That's the stuff for hi-temp masking. Yes it is a bit spendy, but it's the only thing we've found that will work for powder to powder detail masking.
