Spectrum,:

Love the site. Each new job is better than the next.

I'm thinking about a Tiemeyer end of season and I'm sure the finish will be as fun as the build.

Until then, I have a AL frame I want to strip, polish, and perhaps have cleared. (Honestly, I may just have y'all powder coat it. However, I do want to do the prep myself first and see if I can get a decent polish.)

I'm concerned about what stripper to use. Something robust, that I can buy of course, but a product that will not degrade the strength of the frame.

Ideas from the pros?

There is a stripper that can be purchased at walmart or any automotive parts house i.e. pep boys or advance It's called aircraft stripper and is available in arosol cans or one quart containers. It works real good for something that can be bought almost anywhere.

Hope this is the place to add on to this topic. I have a Giant Rainier that I am going to disassemble and have blasted clean. Is there a better way to strip her of her natural skin? My goal is to have it powdered and clearcoated with a solid protective finish. Is a liquid stripper better than a sandblast? I have contacted the nice guys over at American Stripping LLC. Thanks!

The short answer is that blasting is best, especially if you are going to powdercoat.

Everything we do gets blasted as opposed to chemical prep. Usually when someone chemically strips, a short cut gets taken and no more prep gets done because they assume the chemical took care of it. But, as with anything there are some "but's..".

In regards to aluminum, it is best if it can be blasted with glass bead because most blasting places use 40-60 grit aluminum oxide, which is considerably more aggressive. Since aluminum is a little soft, it leaves a texture that is tough to get rid of sometimes, and if you just clear it it makes it look dirty.

One thing that you can have done (or we can do here) for aluminum is ball burnish it in a vibratory polisher, which gives the aluminum a microscopic "crust". It look semi-polised, can be "touched-up" later, and is long lasting. Technically it is not a finish but a surface treatment, so there is no finish to fail.

Hope that helps a little bit.

You can call Liz at 719.633.5560, she runs the office and can help you decide what you want to do and cost involved, or go to the contact link and send her an e-mail.
